Dragonfly Resin 2

Description

I recently found out a coworker was holding out on me.  She had previously found a HUGE dragonfly carcass, dried and perfectly intact.  I offered to cast it in resin for her, as I'd been wanting to make another since the first Dragonfly Resin I did.  She agreed and its finally cured enough to the point where I was able to snap a few final photos of it.

I like this one better than my first, and I also don't.  Some more trial and error happened with this, but luckily not as bad as some of my other projects.  I learned that wax and resin don't mix, as per the rocks I used.  I bought them at a craft store, and they have a small thin coating of wax on them to keep that shine.  Well...the wax tends to run off when the resin is curing over it...I had to sand down the surface and re-coat it, and even with the re-coating its got a bit of run in it (but not so bad to worry about).  You can really see the effects in the rocks beneath the resin, that kind of reflective look?  Little miffed as the natural color of the rocks would have looked much better...but again, its not so badly detracting from the piece.

The outside of the flowerpot base is messily coated in resin, as when I cast it originally it started to spill over, so I figured Hey!  I'll just paint resin on the outside and make it all uniform!  Well...that turned into a hug mess very quickly...I managed to neaten it up, but now its kinda spotty and blotchy looking.  But who cares, no one is going to focus on the outside of it, right?

:wow: this is lovely!! I think both dragonfly projects are incredible. I love both the concept and that fact that you managed to get yours hand on two beautiful carcasses that are so unique from each other! I love how the border of rocks and moss matches the coloring of the dragonfly. It complements it so well!
Man, though, sanding the rocks sound super tedious. :faint:
:giggle: yeah, who cares about the outside? the light reflecting off it is the only reason my eyes were drawn to it, but the dragonfly is waaay more interesting. :happybounce:

How long does this type of project take you?
